DR Congo Thamani Fully Washed Coffee
Savor a very special coffee offering from DR Congo!
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) used to be renowned as Africa's breadbasket. The country has 75 to 80 million hectares of agricultural terrain, stretching from the hill slopes of Province Orientale to the Northeastern. Coffee was definitely brought to the region by early European settlers although the actual date of coffee's entry in the DRC is unidentified.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), coffee is a key economic crop. Since the 1960s, production has been rapidly increasing. Coffee was considered as a way to help some of the Congo's people improve their economic situation.
At a time when there was a battle with the Coffee Leaf Rust, the DRC focused on supplying the European demand for coffee. It's reasonable that the agricultural industry in Eastern DRC is still recovering after more than 30 years of conflict. Coffee is making a comeback today, thanks to private and public sector investment that has aided the establishment of cooperatives and washing stations that aim to enhance coffee quality and pricing.

DR Congo Thamani Fully Washed Coffee is a combination of high-quality beans from several cooperative washing stations (Changwe, RUJCAFE (Ruhunde Jeunes Caféiculteurs), Alpha New and COCASKA (Co-opérative de Café du Sud Kivu)) in South Kivu. The volcanic soil in South Kivu is full of nutrients, and the climate is suitable for the growth of Arabica beans.
This coffee grows at 1,600 meters above sea level. Farmers carefully pick coffee cherries and send them to a community cooperative washing station. Cherry is sorted at the point of entry, and then the parchment is cleaned in clean water and laid out on drying beds after a time of wet fermentation. To achieve equal drying, the parchment is turned regularly (drying time is about 14 days.)
